Gym Machines for Beginners: What They Do and How to Use Them

Short answer: Machines are the easiest way to start lifting because they guide the movement. The six most useful for beginners are the leg press, chest press, lat pulldown, seated cable row, leg curl and cable machine. Adjust the seat so the joint you are moving lines up with the machine pivot, start light, and move slowly.

1. Leg press (legs and glutes)

Feet shoulder-width on the platform. Lower until knees are about 90 degrees, then push through your whole foot. Do not lock your knees hard at the top.

2. Chest press (chest, shoulders, triceps)

Set the seat so handles line up with mid-chest. Press out, pause, and return slowly. Keep shoulders down and back.

3. Lat pulldown (back, biceps)

Lock knees under the pad. Pull the bar to your upper chest, leading with your elbows. Do not pull it behind your neck.

4. Seated cable row (mid back)

Sit tall, slight knee bend. Pull the handle to your stomach, squeeze your shoulder blades together, then let your arms straighten under control.

5. Leg curl (hamstrings)

Line your knee up with the machine pivot. Curl the pad down, pause, return slowly.

6. Cable machine (almost everything)

Adjustable pulley for rows, presses, triceps pushdowns and core moves like the Pallof press. Start with the lightest pin.

FAQ

Are machines or free weights better for beginners?

Both work. Machines are easier to learn and safer when training alone; add dumbbells as you get comfortable.
